After negotiating a small allowance from her father for the following year, Caroline resolves to accept any invitations that might come her way, principally from her two old school friends. She becomes a photographer’s assistant, but a threat of a scandal means she is forced to leave. Concerned that she won’t meet the terms of her father’s allowance, Caroline secures another position enabling her to mix more with the lower classes, to her mother’s exasperation.
Caroline’s adventures continue, taking her across the country and into contact with some colourful characters. Will she end the year with money in the bank? Or will she give up her new freedom and settle down with one of her admirers?
It is 1926 and Caroline is starting to enjoy a varied and interesting social life. Her allowance is secure for now, but can she evade the advances of her suitors and maintain her independence?
After a life-changing event, Caroline and her father George move into a new apartment in Cheltenham and quickly meet the other residents. The General Strike forces Caroline to consider her situation in a different light, and to understand that actions have consequences. Her address is not the only change Caroline must come to terms with over the next few months as she watches her friends marry and begin to settle down. To clear her head, Caroline travels to an artists’ retreat in Cornwall. Yet this only adds to the confusion she feels about her own future.
With the anniversary of her brother’s death once again looming, a chance conversation may provide the solution to Caroline’s need to take the next step on her journey to independence.
After an unusual proposal, Caroline Munhead begins 1928 with the world at her feet. However, as the tenancy of her cottage by the sea draws to a close, she makes a decision that surprises many who know her in north Somerset.
This leaves her with more decisions to make; where to live, and with whom. Just when it seems everything is settled, a face from the past reappears…
Caroline Munhead has spent two years catching up with her old school friends and taking her first tentative steps as a young woman. Now in 1927 she spreads her wings a little further and finds herself in north Somerset in a rented cottage. A new group of friends and a new set of challenges bring Caroline to an unexpected proposal. Will she make Somerset her forever home? Will a message from beyond the grave prove true?
This third instalment of the Catching Up series is sure to engage readers old and new in Caroline’s journey of self-discovery.
For Caroline and Max, the Great Depression is tough but they know they are fortunate having a home and a stable income. Many are less fortunate, and through 1930 old and new friends need Caroline and Max in ways no one could have foretold.
Now settled in Plymouth, Caroline Munhead (or Mrs Bird as she is becoming known) begins 1930 with the same desire as many British people that year: to find employment. The Depression is biting the country hard. For some, children are an expensive luxury in such difficult times; for others they are the reward for patience. Caroline and Max’s resolve not to have children of their own is tested to extremes, as are Caroline’s friendships.
In this fifth instalment of the Catching Up series, both new and familiar faces have some important decisions to make, while others have those decisions taken out of their hands. Will Caroline’s trusting nature benefit those around her, or will it lead to disaster when all is not as it seems?
